Cape Town City returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership when they claimed a controversial 1-0 win over Polokwane City at Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.

Having lost their last two games to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, Benni McCarthy's side looked destined to miss out on victory for a third successive match, until Lehlohonolo Majoro's penalty from virtually the last kick of the match, in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time, secured the three points.

The opening exchanges of the first-half produced few clear chances, with the first goal-mouth action occurring in the 29th minute when the visitors appealed vociferously for a handball in the home side's penalty area.

Shortly afterwards, Majoro had his side's first real effort, but the striker's thunderous shot cannoned off the right post of Harold Ndlovu's goal.

After the break, the hosts continued to grow into the game, with Polokwane struggling to maintain possession for the most part.

Majoro went close once again in the 67th minute, but this time his goal-bound shot from a corner kick was cleared off the line, much to the dismay of the fans in the stadium.

With two minutes left in regulation time, Majoro finally had the ball in the back of the net, but the referee incorrectly flagged for offside, only to change his mind and then awarded the goal. Subsequently, the Polokwane City players hounded him and he changed his mind once again, much to the frustration of McCarthy and his bench.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, the referee then awarded a controversial penalty when Salulani Phiri was ruled to have handled the ball. Moments later Majoro stepped up and slotted home the spot-kick to earn Cape Town City a well-deserved victory.
