Percy Tau's goals either side of half-time gave Mamelodi Sundowns a well-deserved 2-1-win over Free State Stars in a Absa Premiership clash at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem on Monday.
After coming on for Anthony Laffor in the 28-minute, Tau opened the scoring with a curling free-kick just before half-time, and added his second of the night on the hour mark. Nhlanhla Vilakazi then added a late consolation goal for the hosts.
Pitso Mosimane's side had the majority of the ball early on, although Stars had the first real chance on goal when Relebogile Mokhuoane's ninth-minute shot failed to trouble debutant Razak Brimah.
The visitors nearly opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Leonardo Castro controlled a long ball beautifully, but the striker could only fire his shot onto the upright.
Even though Stars came into the game more as the half progressed, Tau broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when his sweetly-struck free-kick found the top corner of Badra Ali Sangare's goal.
Stars started the second-half on the front foot, but were 2-0 down in the 59th minute when Tau found himself in a bit of space on the edge of the Stars penalty area and fired home from 20 yards out.
With the result all but secured, Sundowns dominated the remainder of the match, and Brimah was never seriously tested.
The home supporters did receive something to cheer about in the 90th minute, though, when Vilakazi added a late consolation goal with a towering header.
