South African Premier Soccer League club Ajax Cape Town have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Glasgow Celtic for the sale of defender Rivaldo Coetzee.

The South African club, which is 51 percent owned by Ajax Amsterdam, released a statement on their website on Monday night in which they announced the deal.

"Ajax Cape Town is extremely proud to announce an agreement with Glasgow Celtic, for the sale of defender Rivaldo Coetzee has been concluded," Ajax said in a statement.

"[Celtic manager Brendon] Rodgers believes Coetzee is a perfect fit for Celtic as he is a ball-playing, dual-footed centre-back with an impressive range of pass."

Ajax did not reveal the terms of the deal, nor if Coetzee had agreed personal terms with the Scottish champions.

The 20-year-old Coetzee, until recently a regular in the South African national team before he lost his starting place, was at one time the country's youngest ever international after making his debut aged 17.

He was on Monday included in the national team squad for two crucial 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde Islands early next month.

South African players are a rarity in the Scottish Premier League, though current national team midfielder Dean Furman did play a single game for Celtic's bitter rivals Glasgow Rangers in 2008.

South African-born Kyle Jacobs also played five games for Kilmarnock in 2013-14, while former goalkeeper Chad Harpur turned out for the same club in the 2007-08 season.
