City make victorious start to new PSL campaign

Cape Town City made the perfect start to their Absa Premiership campaign when they beat Bidvest Wits 1-0 at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday night.

In what was former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy's first PSL game in charge of the Cape side, Lehlohonolo Majoro scored the only goal of the match shortly before the halftime interval.

The Clever Boys, though, shouldn't feel too disheartened by the result, after dominating the match for large periods.

The hosts started in positive fashion, with Vincent Pule proving an outlet down the left flank throughout the first half.

Helder Pelembe, James Keene and Pule all went close in the first 20 minutes, as City focused predominantly on defense.

As the half progressed, the visitors grew into the game and in the 41st minute broke the deadlock, albeit against the run of play somewhat.

After being awarded a freekick just outside the penalty area, Lebogang Manyama's accurate delivery was too much for Moeneeb Josephs in the Wits goal to deal with and Majoro made no mistake with a header from close range.

In the second half, Wits continued to have the better of the chances and had a golden opportunity to level matters when they were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute.

After being fouled just inside the penalty area, Gabadinho Mhango picked himself up to take the spot kick, but Shu-Aib Walters in the City goal guessed correctly to maintain his side's advantage.

With time running out, a moment of magic from Mhango, which saw him dribble past three City defenders, nearly brought Gavin Hunt's side level, but Keane was unable to make clean contact with the Malawian's header.
