Michael van Gerwen brushes off Peter Wright to go top of Premier League

World No.1 Michael van Gerwen made short work of rival Peter Wright in the battle for Premier League supremacy at Exeter on Thursday.

A week after throwing for an average of 123.4, the highest ever seen on a live televised event, Van Gerwen was back to record a 7-2 victory over Wright with another impressive average of 116.67.

Victory at the Westpoint Arena saw the Dutch star leapfrog Wright at the top of the Premier League table, with the Scot eventually slipping back to third after Phil Taylor defeated Adrian Lewis 7-1 in the first match of the evening.

"It was another fantastic performance for myself," Van Gerwen told Sky Sports. "I'm really glad I brought good confidence from last week into tonight. Myself and Peter produced a fantastic game early on and I was the one able to carry that on.

"You need to be confident because if you're not, you can't produce something like this. Also the crowd helps, but you need to be really focused.

"For me it was just about the two points tonight, to try to get top of the table. It's always nice to beat Peter or Phil, but winning is the most important thing. If you want to win, you need to try to play as good as possible, and I played pretty good tonight."

In the night's other action, PDC world champion Gary Anderson saw off bottom-of-the-pile Robert Thornton 4-1, James Wade saw off the challenge of Dave Chisnall 7-4, and Michael Smith wrapped up proceedings with a narrow 7-5 victory over Raymond van Barneveld.
