Tour de France: Peter Sagan wins Stage 13 as Geraint Thomas keeps lead

Cycling

Peter Sagan won Stage 13 of the Tour de France while Geraint Thomas of Team Sky retained the yellow jersey for the third consecutive day.

World champion Sagan was fastest down the final stretch, crossing the line ahead of Alexander Kristoff and Arnaud Démare in a bunch finish in Valence.

In General Classification, Thomas maintains his one minute, 39 second lead over teammate and 2017 Tour de France champion Chris Froome.

After the drama of Alpe D'Huez, Friday's 169.5 kilometer stage from Bourg d'Oisans to Valence was a far more straightforward affair.

Thomas De Gendt, Michael Schar, Dimitri Claeys and Tom Scully made up a small breakaway group of four riders and established a lead of around two minutes.

With the Tour dropping down from the Alps, there were only two categorized climbs for the riders to contend. De Gendt won the first of the day at Côte de Brié while Scully won the second at Côte de Sainte-Eulalie-en-Royans.

As only four points were up for grabs, the results didn't affect the King of the Mountain standings. French rider Julian Alaphilippe retained the polka dot jersey.

With 20km to go, Schar was the last of the breakaway group remaining, pushing ahead after De Gendt, Claeys and Scully dropped away.

But the Swiss rider only had a slim lead over the peleton and was quickly caught with six kilometers to go.

Several leading sprinters, including Dylan Groenewegen, Andre Greipel and Fernando Gaviria, abandoned the Tour after Stage 12, resulting in an open sprint finish in Valence.

In the end it was Sagan, the wearer of the green jersey, who was fastest, winning his third stage of this year's Tour.
