Former Vuelta a Espana winner Luis Herrera says that regular sun exposure during his cycling career caused him to get skin cancer. The Colombian -- who won the Vuelta in 1987 -- was the first South American cyclist to win one of the three Grand Tours. In an interview with Blu Radio in Columbia, the 56-year-old revealed that he was diagnosed with the illness six years ago after a dermatologist found cancer spots on his face, arms and hands. Herrera -- who also won "King of the Mountains" jerseys at the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France -- claims that the lack of precautions taken by cyclists in the 1980s played a big role in causing the illness. "Maybe at the time we didn't take precautions to apply sunblock because there was no time," he said. "Sometimes we were sweating a lot." Despite currently being in good health, Herrera confirmed that he is still receiving regular treatment to stop the condition getting worse. "I'm feeling good, I'm well, but I'm taking great care of my arms and my face."
