Chris Froome won the stage 16 time trial to stretch his overall lead in Vuelta a Espana to one minute and 58 seconds with five stages remaining. Team Sky's Froome, 32, was 57 seconds faster than his nearest rival, Vincenzo Nibali [UCI WorldTeam Bahrain-Merida], who claimed third place in the ride from Circuito de Navarra to Logrono. Froome said: "To extend my lead and to be in this position with four big days of racing left is obviously a great position to be in, but I am going to take it one day at a time. "I've got a good buffer but the race is not over. I have to keep fighting every day now, but this is one step closer to Madrid." There was progress for Team Sunweb's Wilco Kelderman as the Dutchman finished second -- 29 seconds behind Froome -- to move up to third overall. Alberto Contador, who is set to retire after the race, was fifth behind Ilnur Zakarin. Wednesday's stage 17 is a 180.5km ride from Villadiego to Los Machucos with Froome edging closer to becoming only the third rider to win the Tour de France and Vuelta in the same year.
