Race leader Bob Jungels finished safely in the middle of the pack to retain the Maglia Rosa, despite crashing on the descent from Vieste. Britain's Geraint Thomas finished six seconds behind the Quick-Step Floors rider retaining his second place.
"The stage was very hard. I took the breakaway. The average speed was very high. [Giovanni] Visconti was probably the most dangerous rival for the stage victory in the front group," said Izagirre.
"I'm very happy that I won. I got an opportunity and I'm glad I didn't miss it."
