The last instance when Australia scored in excess of 600 in an Ashes Test was at Cardiff in 2009. This is the fifth highest score for Australia in Ashes Tests and the highest at home, going past the 659 for 8 declared at Sydney in 1946. Since the start of Jan 2016, England have conceded more than 600 on four occasions, which is themost for a team in this period. Sri Lanka have conceded in excess of 600 on three occasions.

However the number of balls per over was eight on that occasion. In matches where the balls per over was six, the previous highest was 174 overs by Sri Lanka in 1995.

Smith's 239 was also the third highest score in 2017, behind the 243 made by both Alastair Cook - against West Indies - and Virat Kohli - against Sri Lanka.

Cook's woes
Alastair Cook's dismissal for 14 continues what has been a wretched run for him over the last five Tests. In 10 innings since his double-century against West Indies at Edgbaston, Cook has a highest of 37, and an average of 14.40. His Ashes numbers are extremely skewed as well: 766 runs in five Tests in the 2010-11 series at an average of almost 128; 1434 runs in the other 28 Ashes Tests at 26.55.
A consolation stat
England's bowlers have had a rough time in this series, and especially in this Test, but the fast-bowling pair of James Anderson and Broad did have something to celebrate, thanks to Anderson's four-wicket haul. They have now collectively taken 763 wickets in the 100 Tests they have played together, the most by any fast-bowling pair in Tests. They went the 762 taken by the pair of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne top the list with 1001 wickets in Tests played together.
