Despite the disappointment of the South Africa's women's team agonisingly missing the ICC Women's World Cup Final, the country will be represented in the showpiece match by umpire Shaun George.
George has been appointed as one of the on-field match officials, alongside Barbadian Gregory Brathwaite, for the Final between India and England to be played at the iconic Lord's Ground in London.
"Shaun also handled the semifinal between Australia and India and follows in the footsteps of our senior umpire, Marais Erasmus, who officiated the recent ICC Champions Trophy Final. It shows in what high regard our match officials are held by both players and administrators," commented Cricket South Africa CEO, Haroon Lorgat.
"Shaun and Adrian Holdstock are both members of the ICC International Panel and both have had excellent World Cups with Adrian also officiating in one of the semifinals [as TV umpire for the same Australia vs. India match].
George played representative cricket for Eastern Province and Transvaal under the non-racial auspices of the South African Cricket Board during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The 49-year-old from Port Elizabeth made his domestic umpiring bow during the 2002-03 season before being promoted to the international ranks in 2010 -- he has officiated in over 50 international matches since.
"We wish Shaun everything of the best for this important and special day in his career. It is going to be a wonderful moment when he walks out in front of a capacity crowd at this famous ground for a World Cup final," concluded Lorgat.
