New Zealand offspinner Jeetan Patel has called time on his international career, with the announcement coming hours after Luke Ronchi, a team-mate at both state and country, had done the same. The 37-year old had played 24 Tests, 43 ODIs and 11 T20Is.

Steady though he was when he first burst onto the international scene in August 2005, Patel gained greater attention during his comeback over a decade later. In 2014, he turned down an offer to tour the West Indies, preferring instead the security he was offered at Warwickshire in the English county circuit. But, having topped the bowling charts in 2016 - three years after his last appearance for New Zealand - he was parachuted into a tour of India in September.

With the incumbent offspinner Mark Craig injuring himself after the first Test in Kanpur, a man who thought he would never play at the top level again was given a second chance at the historic Eden Gardens. Patel was even on course for a maiden Test fifty in New Zealand's first innings, but was stopped three runs short.

In March earlier this year, he got to play his first Test at the Basin Reserve, his home ground. His final match for New Zealand was an ODI against Bangladesh in May; he was picked in the squad for the Champions Trophy but did not play.

Patel was named one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year in 2015. Although his international career has ended after 130 wickets in 78 matches across formats, he intended to continue representing Wellington in domestic cricket.
