17.2 England have held on to one, and it's Jordan at deep midwicket. Slower ball, over pitched, and Dilshan tries to wallop that over midwicket for six. Not timing the ball has been the story of his innings though, and this one is no different. Jordan settles under it about 10 metres from the fence and pouches it near his chest. 156/3
1.2 gone! Kusal looks like he feels he didn't hit it, but there was a definite deflection on first viewing. This is a short ball outside leg stump - one that should have been put away really, but Perera goes for the pull too late and seems to have got glove on it, on the way to the keeper. 4/1
16.4 gone! England get him finally. This is fullish and on the stumps, Mahela tries to slog that away on the legside with the angle, but he misses again, and the ball crashes into leg stump. The end of an equally impressive and fortuitous innings. There were some great shots between the catching chances. 149/2

18.1 full ball on off stump. Sanga clears his front leg and tries to bash that straight down the ground as well, but mistimes it terribly and just lobs it up in the air for wide mid off to get under it. Probably wasn't the man for the occasion, it has to be said. 169/4

0.5 gone! What sweet bowling from Kule to draw that mistake. Lumb comes at him again, and aims a big shot over mid on. Kule beats him off the pitch and the ball rattles the middle stump. LEDs light up, Kule is leaping in enjoyment. 0/1

0.6 double strike! This would have been a pretty decent ball in a Test match. It's full, swinging late, but not too much. Moves a little off the seam as well, drawing Moeen into the shot. He drives, the outside edge is collected and it flies low to second slip. You read that right. Second slip. What a start for Kule. 0/2
16.2 and there's the breakthrough for Sri Lanka! Kulasekara does it. All three wickets have fallen to him. It's a fullish ball outside off stump, and hes pummeled it straight to the man at long on. Not sure why Morgan didn't get under it as he'd hoped, he's smashed balls like that for the last half hour. Maybe it stopped on the pitch a little. 152/3
16.6 gone! A fourth for Kulasekara, and this one is off a short ball, around stomach high. Buttler backs away and tried to thump it over the straight boundary, but it takes the top edge and it loops to cover, where Chandimal backpedals and holds the catch, close to his chest. 156/4

Match Notes

  • Hales achieves blast-off

No Englishman had scored a T20 international century until Alex Hales did it while taking Sri Lanka apart in a tall chase

  • The problem with low catches

The cricket cognoscenti is largely eager to give the fielder the benefit of the doubt when a catch is referred. This should not be the case

  • Why do we over-react when changing cricket's rules?

Instead of helping umpires react instinctively to situations, we have burdened them with misleading technology that has turned them into second-class citizens

  • Chandimal suspended for one match

Dinesh Chandimal will miss Sri Lanka's final group match against New Zealand after he was suspended for one match due to Sri Lanka being found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate for the second time inside 12 months

  • England discover map through uncharted waters

Having tossed away opportunities in the field with reckless abandon and slumping into negative territory at the start of their chase, England found the courage to make amends
