Strong: USF win was salute to Irma victims

South Florida coach Charlie Strong said his team wanted to give those affected by Hurricane Irma "a sense of relief for a few hours" during Friday night's 47-23 win over Illinois.

USF players greet their remaining fans after a game in which it had three 100-yard rushers for the second time in school history.

Despite the penalties and special teams mistakes, USF played its best game and dominated in ways many expected when the season began. Illinois is clearly in need of some answers, especially at quarterback.

Illinois coach Lovie Smith might have a quarterback controversy on his hands between Chayce Crouch and Jeff George Jr. George just led a touchdown drive and has outplayed Crouch considerably in the pass game.

Illinois brought quarterback Jeff George Jr. in hoping to spark the offense, but it was more of the same -- both his third-quarter drives ended in punts. Through nearly three quarters, the Illini have run just 38 plays.

USF offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert told me pregame he had a good feeling about his offense going into the Illinois game. If there's been a bright spot it's been his unit's play in the run game: 239 yards on the ground in the first half.

USF and Illinois played an ugly first half, capped with a combined 26 penalties between them. The record for most combined penalties in a game is 36 by San Jose State and Fresno State on Oct. 4, 1986.

South Florida offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert wisely goes tempo on third-and-1, resulting in a Darius Tice touchdown run. Illinois wasn't ready at all. The Bulls have quite a few options in the run game other than QB Quinton Flowers.

Illinois had more penalties (7) than rush yards (6) in the first quarter, and that pretty much sums up the way the Illini offense has played so far.

USF defensive tackle Deadrin Senat has been ejected for targeting for the second time this season. His loss is a big one, as he's the Bulls' best player on the defensive line.

USF went into its game against Illinois tied for last in blocked kicks allowed, with two. That number has doubled to four in the first quarter alone, as the Bulls had a field goal and extra point attempted blocked.

The Illinois-USF game has begun but not the way the Bulls wanted. Special teams miscues have plagued this team and it happened again on the first drive when Emilio Nadelman's 36-yard field goal attempt was blocked.
