Utah State has suspended Jamaal Evans after the freshman linebacker was charged Thursday with rape and forcible sodomy stemming from an incident earlier this month.
Evans, 19, was arrested Wednesday night and booked in the Cache County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
Police allege he raped a woman at an off-campus party that began June 17 and continued into the early hours of June 18, according to a police report obtained by the Deseret News. Investigators say the woman was too intoxicated to have consented to sex.
A preliminary hearing has been set for July 10.
According to the report, the woman's friends told investigators they watched as she and Evans went upstairs. The woman's friends later became concerned and began searching for her. One friend found the woman's cellphone under a pool table and then texted Evans; he didn't reveal where they were and "would only tell her to 'hold up' and 'we good,'" the report states.
The friend went to a locked bathroom where Evans and the woman were, eventually getting inside to the find the woman nude and "hunched over and ... completely incoherent," according to the police report.
Investigators wrote that Evans, when asked about the incident, "described what occurred as, 'when you're in the moment and you want what you want, you just got to do it sometimes.'"
Evans told police that he didn't believe the woman was drunk and, in a subsequent phone conversation with the woman that a police detective recorded, repeatedly said he didn't think the woman was impaired during their encounter.
According to the report obtained by the Deseret News, "[The woman] accuses Evans of rape, to which he responds that she needs to trust him because he is the only person who was there and knows what happened."
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Evans was an all-state quarterback from Las Vegas who redshirted last season for the Aggies.
