Louisiana-Lafayette fires coach Mark Hudspeth after 7 seasons

LAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana-Lafayette has fired coach Mark Hudspeth, one day after a season-ending 63-14 loss at Appalachian State that prevented the Cajuns from becoming bowl eligible.

ULL athletic director Bryan Maggard, who announced the move on Sunday, says he has appointed assistant coach Michael Desormeaux as acting director of the Cajuns' football program while the university begins the search process for its next head coach.

Officially, Hudspeth went 29-38 in seven seasons, but the Cajuns had to forfeit 22 victories, including 2011 and 2013 New Orleans Bowl wins, because of NCAA sanctions stemming from a former assistant's rigging of standardized test scores.

Otherwise, Hudspeth would have gone 51-38, including four straight New Orleans Bowl victories from 2011 to '14.

This season, the Cajuns went 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.
