Arizona State's Jay Norvell hired by Nevada as head coach

Nevada is hiring Arizona State assistant coach Jay Norvell as its head coach, sources told ESPN on Wednesday night.

Norvell, the receivers coach and passing-game coordinator for the Sun Devils, interviewed Wednesday for the position. Eastern Washington coach Beau Baldwin and Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig were the other finalists for the job.

FootballScoop.com first reported Norvell's hiring.

The 53-year-old Norvell has been an offensive coordinator at Nebraska, UCLA and Oklahoma, but this is his first head-coaching opportunity. He spent the 2015 season at Texas, where he briefly called offensive plays, before joining Arizona State's staff this year.

Norvell replaces Brian Polian, who agreed to part ways with Nevada after going 23-27 in four seasons at the school. A former Iowa defender, Norvell coached at Northern Iowa, Wisconsin and Iowa State before spending six seasons in the NFL. He returned to the college ranks as Nebraska's offensive coordinator in 2004.
