Tennessee Tech hires Marcus Satterfield as new coach

The chance to return to his home state was something Marcus Satterfield couldn't pass up.

Satterfield was named the new football coach at Tennessee Tech on Monday after spending the previous three seasons as offensive coordinator at Temple.

"As a coach's son growing up in the state of Tennessee, and coaching in the state and the Ohio Valley Conference, I have always looked at Tennessee Tech as a possible landing spot for me," said Satterfield, whose father Bill coached in the state at Greenback High School from 1990-1994.

Becoming the 12th head coach in Tennessee Tech history, the 39-year-old replaces Watson Brown, who retired last month after nine seasons.

The Golden Eagles finished 4-7 this year.

Satterfield, an East Tennessee State graduate, has plenty of coaching experience in Tennessee, including as offensive coordinator at Chattanooga from 2009-2012 after holding the same role at UT Martin -- another OVC program -- from '06-07 before adding the job of associate head coach there in '08.

He also was an assistant at Chattanooga from 1999-2001 before spending '02-03 at Tennessee as a graduate assistant and then serving as an assistant at Richmond in '04 and Western Carolina in '05.

"He is an excellent X's and O's coach, and he's a 'player's coach,'" Tech athletic director Mark Wilson said. "He comes to Tennessee Tech with a great vision of how he wants to operate, and where he wants to take Golden Eagle football."
