Hampton coach Cornell Maynor, officiating crew disciplined by MEAC

College Football, Hampton Pirates, Richmond Spiders

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's actions on Tuesday somewhat vindicated Hampton coach Cornell Maynor's complaints about the game officials in the Pirates' game against Richmond last Saturday.

But the conference still had to discipline Maynor.

Hampton's second-year coach received a letter of reprimand and was fined for his public comments concerning the officiating in his team's 31-28 loss. The game officials also were disciplined following an evaluation of video by the MEAC's coordinator of football officials Tom Symonette, who determined the crew did not consistently maintain game control and lacked the appropriate judgment on several calls.

"We expect our officials to execute the highest of standards while officiating and remain consistent in adjudicating the rules of the game," MEAC commissioner Dennis Thomas said.

One of the calls that angered Maynor was an unsportsmanslike conduct whistled against Hampton cornerback Justin Williams that gave Richmond a first down on a fourth-quarter drive. With his comments, Maynor violated the MEAC's bylaw on criticizing officials.
