Monmouth holds big early lead to beat Liberty 56-39

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Kenji Bahar threw for two touchdowns and Erik Zokouri ran for two more as Monmouth held onto a big halftime lead to beat Liberty 56-39 on Saturday.

The Hawks (6-1, 1-0 Big South) scored on four consecutive possessions in the first half, beginning with Pete Guerriero's 95-yard kickoff return early in the first quarter. Zokouri scored from 25 and 35 yards out and Lonnie Moore added a scoring run. Guerriero had a 41-yard run late in the second quarter for a 35-19 halftime lead.

Bahar finished with 244 yards passing. Zokouri ran for 193 yards and Guerriero ran for 162.

Steve Calvert threw three touchdown passes for Liberty in the third quarter to close it to 49-33. But Bahar answered early in the fourth with a 61-yard scoring strike to Reggie White Jr. to secure the Hawks' advantage.

Calvert had 408 yards and five touchdowns passing for the Flames (3-4, 0-2).
