Carl Frampton brands talks of fighting Michael Conlan 'absurd'

Boxing

Carl Frampton has ruled out ever fighting fellow countryman Michael Conlan while insisting the talk of a potential bout is "absurd".

Frampton (25-1, 14 KOs), 31, fights Luke Jackson on August 18 at Windsor Park in Belfast as he looks to continue his pursuit of becoming a full world champion after winning the WBO interim featherweight belt against Nonito Donaire in April.

Conlan (8-0, 5 KOs), 26, only turned professional in March 2017 but people are already tipping the two Northern Irish fighters to meet in the ring one day.

"Why certain parts of the media keep bringing it up is beyond me because it is quite obvious Mick and I are at two completely different stages of our careers," Frampton said in the Sunday Life, as quoted by the Belfast Telegraph.

"Secondly we're mates, so when you put those two things together it just makes the whole suggestion absurd.

"Quite simply, once and for all, Mick and I will never fight and I hope this puts an end to all the silly talk and questions.

"Mick is a developing professional and I'm at a stage of my career where I'm looking to have world title fights because who knows how long I have left.

"There's a lot that goes in to developing into a top professional and Mick is on his way to the top, but people need to get off his back and be a bit more patients because it doesn't happen overnight."

Conlan recently fought for the first time as professional in Belfast, claiming a points decision win over Adeilson Dos Santos on June 30 to extend his unbeaten record.
