Ex-heavyweight champ Hasim Rahman to be manager

Boxing

Former heavyweight world champion Hasim Rahman has been retired from the ring since 2014, but now he has a new job in boxing: manager.

Rahman has signed on to work with management firm Prince Ranch Boxing in Las Vegas, the company has announced.

Rahman is on board to help the company scout talent and work with house trainer Clarence "Bones" Adams, a former junior featherweight world titleholder.

"Hasim has a keen eye when it comes to scouting talented fighters," Greg Hannely, president of Prince Ranch Boxing, said. "Adding him to our management team is only going to make us stronger. He's been in the ring with world class fighters and knows what it takes to get to the top. He's going to be a valuable asset to our team."

Rahman (50-9-2, 41 KOs), 45, of Baltimore, was a longtime contender during his 20-year career but made history in the early morning hours of April 22, 2001, on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa, when he scored a monumental upset by knocking out Lennox Lewis in the fifth round to win the heavyweight world championship. It is one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

Rahman, however, suffered a fourth-round knockout loss to Lewis in the immediate rematch seven months later. Rahman went on to win another world title and had several other significant fights against opponents such as Wladimir Klitschko, Evander Holyfield, David Tua, John Ruiz, James Toney and Alexander Povetkin.

Rahman said he and Hannely have known each other for several years and "I'm happy to be part of his management team. We have a lot of young fighters working out at the Prince Ranch training facility who are looking for solid management. I'm here to scout the talent that comes our way and sign the best fighters. We are building a nice stable of boxers who we believe can become world champions."

Among the boxers in the company's stable are Mexican featherweights Isaac Avelar (14-0, 9 KOs) and Edwing Davila (17-0, 10 KOs), Las Vegas welterweight Blair Cobbs (7-0, 5 KOs), Las Vegas bantamweight Damien Vasquez (13-0, 7 KOs), Mexican light heavyweight Humberto Velazco (19-1-1, 13 KOs), Los Angeles junior featherweight Victor Pasillas (12-0, 5 KOs) and Denver junior welterweight Donavan Estrella (11-0, 4 KOs).
