Conor McGregor claims Floyd Mayweather has abandoned talks over a lucrative rematch and says he's proud of his "son" for opting to stay retired. Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) stopped McGregor after 10 rounds of their August 2017 boxing match -- McGregor's debut in the sport -- and speculation there would be a return UFC bout gathered pace when Mayweather was filmed entering an Octagon. However, McGregor has stated that 'Money' Mayweather, 40, has walked away from negotiations. The Irishman said via Instagram: "I am happy for Floyd and his recent announcement that he is out of these current fight negotiations. It is the reason I never seeked [sic] the rematch in the first place. I was happy for him in retirement. "My game is a very unforgiving one. It is not like other games. I understand completely him staying retired. I will now carry on in my negotiations and see where it goes. "Have a great retirement Junior. Now come here and give your old man a hug for old times' sake. I'm proud of you son. Yours truly, Senior." Although McGregor is set to return to his primary sport in 2018, he may find himself without a belt as interim champion Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov are set to face-off for the UFC lightweight crown at UFC 223.
