SEC Week 2 power rankings: Georgia moves up following key road win

With Week 2 complete, time to update the conference power rankings. A little movement near the top this week:

1. Alabama (2-0): That was more like it. Jalen Hurts returned to his SEC Offensive Player of the Year form against Fresno State, throwing for 128 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 154 yards and two scores during the 41-10 win.

2. Georgia (2-0): We could nitpick the offense, but what’s the point? Jake Fromm acquitted himself well in his first career start on the road at Notre Dame and the defense came up large.

3. LSU (2-0): The Tigers did what they were supposed to do, make quick work of Chattanooga. Now comes the SEC schedule, with a trip to Mississippi State on tap next week.

4. Auburn (1-1): Losing a one-possession game on the road against a Top 5 team is nothing to turn your nose up at. But when your offense can’t find the end zone once and Jarrett Stidham is sacked 11 times, you’ve got problems.

5. South Carolina (2-0): The Gamecocks are 2-0 after a 31-13 win over Missouri. They brought a solid defensive effort against a team that scored 72 the week before and are now 6-3 since Jake Bentley became the starting quarterback last season.

6. Tennessee (2-0): After surviving the season opener against Georgia Tech, a 35-point win at home against Indiana State was just what the doctor ordered. With that said, quarterback Quinten Dormady’s two turnovers weren't ideal in an otherwise good offensive performance.

7. Arkansas (1-1): Lots of questions for the Razorbacks heading into their off week following a 28-7 home loss to TCU. The offense struggled (quarterback Austin Allen threw for a career-low 138 yards) and special teams were a mess.

8. Florida (0-1): On the one hand, the unexpected Saturday off gives the Gators an extra week to get ready for Tennessee. But given the tumult of preparing for Hurricane Irma, it’s difficult to say where Florida’s focus will be.

9. Mississippi State (2-0): Ho-hum. Just another five-touchdown performance from Bulldogs quarterback Nick Fitzgerald. But after beating Charleston Southern and Louisiana Tech by a combined 106-21 to start the season, the real fun begins as LSU prepares to come to town.

10. Texas A&M (1-1): Even in a victory (24-14 over Nicholls State), concerns surrounding the Aggies are plentiful. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Aggies were tied 14-14 with their FCS foe. That's not good. Texas A&M hasĀ a ton of work to do.

11. Kentucky (2-0): The Wildcats trailed in the second half to Eastern Kentucky (16-10 in the third quarter) but were able to come back and pull out the win. They had a lot of "silly mistakes" that Mark Stoops said need to be cleaned up as they enter SEC play next week.

12. Ole Miss (2-0): The Rebs’ defense gives you pause, but boy oh boy that passing game really is something. Shea Patterson throwing to AJ Brown & Co. is fun to watch. Against UT Martin, Patterson set a school record for passing yards (489).

13. Vanderbilt (2-0): The Commodores have won two games they were supposed to win (Middle Tennessee in Week 1; Alabama A&M in Week 2). The defense and the quarterback play have been good thus far, but the competition level rises quickly as No. 18 Kansas State comes to town.

14. Missouri (1-1): If you're making staff changes this early in the season, it's usually not a good sign. That's what the Tigers did as Barry Odom fired defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross after a 31-13 loss to South Carolina. The Tigers have allowed 74 points in the first two weeks.
