49ers re-sign DE Cassius Marsh to two-year deal

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers re-signed a former New England Patriots player acquired during the season on Wednesday afternoon, but it wasn't quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Defensive end/linebacker Cassius Marsh signed a two-year contract with the Niners. He joined the team off waivers from New England on Nov. 22 and appeared in six games for the Niners after his arrival. He made 10 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles in those six games.

"Since joining the team late last season, Cassius has impressed us with his unique skill set and the tremendous energy and passion he brings to all phases of the game,” general manager John Lynch said. “Cassius is a great example of our desire to reward our own players with contract extensions as we continue to build out our roster. We’re excited to have him as a 49er moving forward.”

Marsh, 25, who originally was a 2014 fourth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks, seemed to fit in right away with the 49ers, quickly fitting in the locker room and offering depth at multiple positions along the defensive line and at strongside linebacker. He spent most of his time as a backup at defensive end, coming in mostly in pass-rushing situations. He averaged almost 30 snaps per game in the final six weeks and also contributed on special teams.

Before joining the Patriots in a Sept. 2, 2017 trade, Marsh played in 37 games in three seasons with Seattle. He had 36 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in his time with the Seahawks. With the Patriots, he had 16 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one blocked field goal before he was waived.

Because Marsh spent more than half a season with the Patriots, he netted more than $100,000 in bonuses for New England's playoff run.

Marsh is the first of the Niners' pending unrestricted free agents to re-sign with the team. San Francisco extended the contract of cornerback K'Waun Williams in September.

As for Garoppolo, the Niners continue to be optimistic about getting a long-term contract done with him in the near future, a notion Lynch has reiterated several times in recent weeks.
