Horror film: Steelers relive playoff loss during offseason workouts

PITTSBURGH -- Reliving an ugly moment can be a healthy thing.

That's what the Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping for during voluntary workouts, where cornerback Joe Haden said the defense is watching video of last season's 45-42 playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The goal? "Figure out what things went wrong," Haden said.

The Super Bowl hopefuls looked sloppy and out of place while giving up 38 points, 164 rushing yards and eight third-down conversions to Jacksonville's offense in the divisional round.

The issue was communication.

"It's not really a skill thing," Haden said. "Everybody has to understand we have the talent to do it, we've just got to be able to be on the same page and communicate better, know your job and your assignment. We have that and we'll be good to go."

The Steelers have undergone changes in the secondary, releasing William Gay and Mike Mitchell and signing veteran safety Morgan Burnett to help shore up the defensive backfield.

The Steelers hope to play more man coverage in 2018 with Haden, Artie Burns, Mike Hilton and Cam Sutton at cornerback. To do just that, Haden said, the team will need better teamwork as plays develop.

"I think the biggest thing is discipline," Haden said. "We have to be able to be on the same page and not have busts on defense. If we have busts, that's the reason why we'll get beat."

Haden seems confident teammates can fill the void left by Mitchell and Gay, who was more of a dime backer in his final year with the team. Haden believes Sean Davis, a strong safety who might move to the free safety spot, and Sutton can increase their roles.

“The free safety spot, we need a sure tackler, someone to go sideline to sideline, being over the top of the corners, just being the blanket of the defense,” Haden said. “If anything breaks, it’s a 20-yard gain and not a 50-yard gain. If a run does go through there they’ll be able to get them down.

“With the dime, someone who is smart, can blitz, cover and knows the defense well. With Cam Sutton and Mike Hilton, with the people we have, we know we have people to cover the third receiver and tight end. I think we’ll be solid.”
