With free agency and the draft completed and OTAs and minicamps scheduled for the next month and a half, here’s a closer look at the depth chart for the Philadelphia Eagles:
OFFENSE
Note: Starters in bold
Quarterback (3): Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Nate Sudfeld
Wentz is on the grind, trying to get his surgically repaired left knee rehabbed in time for the start of the season. If he isn't, the Eagles have the Super Bowl MVP at the ready.
Running back (4): Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, Darren Sproles, Donnel Pumphrey
The Eagles are expected to add Notre Dame undrafted free agent Josh Adams to the group as well. Wendell Smallwood and Pumphrey need strong summers to guarantee their spots.
Wide receiver (6): Alshon Jeffery, Mike Wallace, Nelson Agholor, Mack Hollins, Shelton Gibson, Bryce Treggs
Wallace replaces Torrey Smith as the speed receiver opposite Jeffery and may prove to be an upgrade.
Tight end (3): Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Richard Rodgers
Expect plenty of two-tight end sets if Goedert, the team's second-round pick in April's draft, transitions well to the pro game. The tandem of Ertz and Goedert, who made one dazzling play after another at South Dakota State, promises to create some serious matchup problems for opposing defenses. This room has a whole new look to it with veterans Brent Celek and Trey Burton, the thrower of the "Philly Special," no longer on the roster.
Tackle (4): Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Matt Pryor
Can they stash Jordan Mailata, the athletically freakish Australian rugby league player, on the practice squad while he develops? The answer will impact how they put this position together.
Guard (4): Brandon Brooks, Stefen Wisniewski, Isaac Seumalo, Chance Warmack
Brooks was one of the best guards in football last season. He and Johnson just dominate the right side.
Center (1): Jason Kelce
Wisniewski can play center in a pinch. The Eagles also have former Kentucky C Jon Toth on the roster. He was a late addition to the practice squad last year.
DEFENSE
Note: Starters in bold
Cornerback (5): Sidney Jones, Jalen Mills, Ronald Darby, Rasul Douglas, Avonte Maddox
Mills is an option to play some snaps in the slot to help fill the void left by Patrick Robinson. Same might be said for Maddox, the 5-foot-9 rookie out of Pitt whom the Eagles selected in the fourth round.
Safety (4):Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Chris Maragos, Tre Sullivan
The Eagles could end up adding a veteran safety like Corey Graham to the fold before the summer is through.
Linebacker (6): Jordan Hicks, Nigel Bradham, Mychal Kendricks, Corey Nelson, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Paul Worrilow
Kendricks did not get traded during the draft, but that doesn't necessarily mean his roster spot is secure. Nelson is a top candidate to replace him on the weak side should Kendricks move on. Joe Walker and Nathan Gerry are fighting for spots too.
Defensive line (10): Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Michael Bennett, Chris Long, Steven Means, Haloti Ngata, Elijah Qualls, Destiny Vaeao
The Eagles added some star power to an already potent defensive line group. Bennett and Ngata replace Vinny Curry and Beau Allen, respectively. The Eagles used a fourth-round draft pick on DE Josh Sweat. Can they safely put him on the practice squad? If not, they'll have to find a spot for him on the 53-man roster.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Punter (1): Cameron Johnston
For the first time in a long time, it's not Donnie Jones. Johnston will probably have some competition in camp.
Kicker (1): Jake Elliott
How do you follow up that rookie season?
Long-snapper (1): Rick Lovato
Transitioned into the position well after the Eagles parted with Jon Dorenbos.
Kick returner (1): Corey Clement
The Eagles could use some more kick returner options. Something to watch.
Punt returner (1): Darren Sproles
He'll be 35 when the season starts, is coming off ACL surgery and, judging by his rehab videos, still looks quick as lightning.
