Busy day nets Giants Josh Mauro, Cody Latimer and B.W. Webb

The free-agent acquisitions keep on coming for the New York Giants, even if they’re not household names or game-changing players. Their thirst for depth has them shopping as if everything is on sale.

The Giants signed defensive ends Kerry Wynn and Josh Mauro, cornerback B.W. Webb and wide receiver Cody Latimer on a busy Monday. They join a free-agent class that already was relatively deep.

Most of Monday's signings aren't expected to be starters. Some may not even be guaranteed spots on the final 53-man roster. They will, however, create competition and provide the Giants options.

A look at each move:

DE Josh Mauro (Cardinals)

He has familiarity with new Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher and his scheme. Mauro fills a need as a natural five-technique defensive end who fits a 3-4 scheme. He brings an ability to do the dirty work (sort of like Brett Keisel used to do for the Pittsburgh Steelers) and stop the run. Mauro should have a spot in the rotation, potentially as a starter. He started 26 games in four seasons with the Cardinals and had 22 tackles and a sack last season.

WR Cody Latimer (Broncos)

Latimer brings size (6 foot 2, 215 pounds) and flashed potential to make plays downfield this past season with Denver, after struggling his first few years in the NFL. But the second-round pick in 2014 has been a quality special-teams player -- particularly as a gunner -- and rejoins his wide receivers coach, Tyke Tolbert, with the Giants.

Latimer, 25, has struggled to stay healthy. He has missed more than two games in each of his four professional seasons. He also has only 35 catches for 445 yards and three touchdowns. As a reference point, Roger Lewis has been more productive as a wide receiver in his two professional seasons than Latimer has been in four.

CB B.W. Webb (Browns)

The veteran cornerback is on his sixth team in six years. He did not appear in a game while with the Cleveland Browns last season. He does have some playing experience with 49 career games under his belt. Webb is a depth signing. He could make the team as a fourth or fifth cornerback. The Giants need bodies at that position after releasing Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie earlier this month and questions still remain about Eli Apple after a tumultuous and troubling 2017 season. So far the Giants have signed Webb, Teddy Williams and Curtis Riley. Consider it bargain/crap-shoot shopping.

DE Kerry Wynn (re-signed)

Wynn returns for another season even with a scheme change. There was some thought that he might not fit in Bettcher’s new defense, which is expected to utilize a base 3-4 scheme. But Wynn is stout at the point of attack and good against the run. With his long frame, he may be a fit as a 3-4 defensive end and could even get by as an outside linebacker on run downs.
