JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars snapped the NFL’s fourth-longest playoff drought by beating the Houston Texans 45-7 on Sunday at EverBank Field. The last time the Jaguars played in the postseason was after the 2007 season, 10 years ago. A lot of things have happened since then -- so here’s a look back at some of the notable events that have taken place since the Jaguars’ last playoff game: 2008
Fidel Castro retires as Cuba’s president. The Large Hadron Collider at CERN is powered up in Geneva, Switzerland. Barack Obama becomes the first African American to be elected president of the United States. "Iron Man," starring Robert Downey Jr., is released Tiger Woods wins his 14th major by shooting 1-under-par 283 in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
2009
2010
Obama signs the Affordable Care Act into law. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster begins in April. Eleven people were killed and an estimated 4.9 million barrels were discharged into the Gulf of Mexico. The broken well was eventually sealed in September. Apple releases the first iPad.
2011
Apple founder Steve Jobs dies. Jared Lee Loughner shoots Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, in a supermarket parking lot in Tucson, Arizona, during a meeting called “Congress on Your Corner.” Loughner also shot 18 other people that day and killed six, including a 9-year-old girl. Giffords survived. Members of SEAL Team Six shoot and kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan during an early-morning raid. Warner Bros. studio fires Charlie Sheen from the hit television show "Two and a Half Men" because of erratic behavior, admitted cocaine use and making derogatory public comments about the show.
2012
"The Avengers" is released. Whitney Houston dies. The Curiosity Rover lands on Mars. The Mayan calendar ends ... but the world does not. Gunman James Eagan Holmes opens fire inside a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Twelve people were killed and 70 injured.
2013
Lance Armstrong goes on Oprah and admits to using performance-enhancing drugs during his record seven consecutive Tour de France titles. Two homemade bombs are detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and wounding hundreds. Brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were eventually captured, though Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot several times and run over by his brother during a gun battle in nearby Watertown. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was eventually captured and sentenced to death. Miley Cyrus twerks at MTV’s Video Music Awards.
2014
The Apple Watch debuts. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 disappears en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. Ellen DeGeneres’ selfie at the Oscars becomes the most retweeted tweet of all time (3.415 million times).
2015
"The Force Awakens" premieres and grosses $1 billion in 12 days. "Fifty Shades of Grey" is released. NASA announces that liquid water has been found on Mars. Leonard Nimoy dies.
2016
Swimmer Michael Phelps wins his 23rd career goal medal at the Rio Olympics. No other person has won more than nine gold medals in any sport. The Chicago Cubs win the World Series for the first time since 1918. Donald Trump is elected the 45th U.S.
president. Notable deaths include David Bowie, Prince, Muhammad Ali, Fidel Castro, George Michael and Carrie Fisher.
