Saints claim linebacker Jonathan Freeny off waivers from Patriots

METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints added some linebacker and special-teams depth Thursday by claiming sixth-year veteran Jonathan Freeny off waivers from the New England Patriots.

To make room, the Saints released veteran cornerback Sterling Moore for the second time this season now that their health has improved in the secondary.

Freeny, 28, spent just one week with the Patriots in his latest stint with them -- making two tackles in Monday’s 27-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Before that, Freeny spent the past two seasons in New England, making a total of 11 starts with 60 tackles, two forced fumbles and a sack. He was cut by the Patriots in September and spent three games with the Baltimore Ravens earlier this season, making two tackles.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pounder spent his first three seasons as a backup with the Miami Dolphins.
