DeMarcus Ware shows Cowboys pass-rushers how it's done

FRISCO, Texas -- Nobody in the history of the Dallas Cowboys has more sacks than DeMarcus Ware, so when he shows up to practice, even in jeans, boots and a white sweatshirt, pass rushers take notice.

“He had a Rolex on too,” Tyrone Crawford said. “I tried to slip that, but his hands were too fast.”

Ware spent time working with the Cowboys at Wednesday’s practice. The only current defensive end to have played with Ware, who recorded 117 sacks from 2005 to 2013 with the Cowboys, is Crawford. The Cowboys drafted DeMarcus Lawrence in the second round to replace Ware’s sack numbers. Through nine games, Lawrence leads the NFL with 11.5 sacks.

“He is a great technician of hands,” Lawrence said. “He’s still got it. Great respect for D-Ware showing us some love.”

Ware and Cowboys first-round pick Taco Charlton hoped to get together last spring before training camp started but could not make their schedules work. They have texted numerous times but Wednesday was the first time they got together.

“It was the chance to get some hands-on (training), get a chance to really pick his brain and pick his mind and just try to add rush moves to my book,” Charlton said. “He did a great job of that. He’s somebody that I’ll probably try to build a relationship with and work with in the future to work on my game.”

Charlton has just one sack in the first nine games of his career. Ware had four in the first 14 games of his career, but none in an eight-week run before closing out his rookie season with four in the final two games.

“Just soaking it on and looking at his feet, looking at his hands, the way he bends, stuff like that,” Charlton said. “Being able to see that firsthand and see how he goes about it in his brain and how he thinks about attacking offensive linemen, that was really the big thing.”

Crawford worked out with Ware and former Cowboy Jason Hatcher a few times in the offseason. He was a teammate of Ware’s in 2012 and ’13.

“He didn’t come and just say hi,” Crawford said. “He went out there and acted with us and showed us some things. D-Ware’s one of the all-time greats so it’s definitely impactful for guys like Taco and even me.”
