John Morton isn't leaving the New York Jets to reunite with Jon Gruden.

On Tuesday, Gruden -- introduced as the new coach of the Oakland Raiders -- announced that another coaching buddy from his past, Greg Olson, will be his offensive coordinator.

Morton's name surfaced at the end of the season as a possible coordinator target for Gruden when it became apparent the former ESPN analyst was leaving the TV booth to become the coach of the Raiders. Morton worked under Gruden with the Raiders in 2002 and considers him a mentor.

It would've been a lateral move for Morton. Actually, it would've been a step backward because he wouldn't have been the play caller in Oakland. To no one's surprise, Gruden announced he will call the plays, which makes Olson a coordinator in name only. So, no, it wouldn't have been a practical move for Morton, but his background with Gruden and affinity for the Raiders fueled speculation of a potential marriage.

The Jets could've blocked Morton from taking the job because he's under contract. The Los Angeles Rams could've blocked Olson, their quarterbacks coach, but they let him out of his contract.

In the end, it worked out for all parties. The Raiders are better off with Olson, whose background with quarterbacks should help fix Derek Carr. By his own admission, Morton isn't a quarterback guru, but he did a solid job in his first season as the Jets' coordinator. They finished only 24th in scoring and 28th in total offense, but there were some encouraging signs and things should get better if they add some weapons in the offseason.
