Broken hand, broken heart: Josh McCown overcome with emotion

The New York Jets' stock report looks at risers and fallers from their 23-0 loss to the Denver Broncos:

ONE UP

QB Josh McCown -- This is unconventional because McCown (two turnovers) didn't have a good game before fracturing his left hand, but he makes our "up" list because of the raw emotion he displayed at his postgame news conference. It was real, and you don't get a chance to see that very often in professional sports.

Statistically, this has been the best year of his career, and now it could be over. Heck, his career could be done. With those thoughts flashing in his mind, McCown choked up at the podium, pausing for several seconds at one point. His eyes filled with tears and he struggled to get the words out of his mouth.

"It's been the best [year] because of the guys, not the numbers," McCown said, his voice cracking. "It's been the best because of the group of men in that locker room. I'm just proud to be part of it. ... If I can finish [the season], I'd love to finish. We'll see what the tests have to say."

Even a cold-hearted person could see how deeply he cares about the team. Maybe the outcome of the game would have been different if his teammates had that kind of passion in their bones.

SEVEN DOWN

Offensive line -- Eight of the Jets' 48 plays went for negative yardage -- four sacks and four running plays. The Jets were manhandled by the Broncos' front, continuing a season-long trend: When they face an upper-tier front, it's usually trouble. General manager Mike Maccagnan needs to do some work on the offensive line.

Offensive coordinator John Morton -- Congratulations, you made the Jets' record book. You called a game in which the offense generated only 100 total yards, the second-lowest total in franchise history.

WRs Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse -- They were the hottest receiving tandem in the league until they ran into cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. Then, suddenly, they disappeared into the thin Rocky Mountain air. Anderson and Kearse combined for four catches and 31 yards on 12 targets. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins finished with one catch for one yard. As he told reporters after the game, "It's just flat-out embarrassing."

QB Bryce Petty -- Serious rust: Five possessions, four punts and one failed fourth down.

CB Morris Claiborne -- Decent season, bad day. Claiborne struggled against Demaryius Thomas, allowing a 20-yard touchdown and at least three other key completions. Thomas finished with eight catches for 93 yards. Why didn't the Jets try to double him? Claiborne also was called for two penalties.

The back seven -- How 'bout a big play to help out the offense? The Jets managed only two sacks and failed to create a turnover. Hello, they faced Trevor Siemian, not John Elway.
