Giants GM Dave Gettleman adds former lieutenant Mark Koncz as consultant

General manager Dave Gettleman has enlisted a familiar face to assist in the reshaping of the New York Giants roster this offseason. He added former Carolina Panthers executive Mark Koncz as a consultant in the personnel department, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Koncz and Gettleman worked together in Carolina. Koncz was the Panthers' pro scouting director from 2000-17 before being promoted by Gettleman to director of player personnel last year.

Koncz was later fired after Marty Hurney took over for Gettleman as general manager.

The Giants have altered their personnel department greatly the past few months. They fired general manager Jerry Reese in early December and Gettleman axed vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross last month.

Ross was in charge of the Giants' draft process and had been in charge of much of the legwork in analyzing the top quarterbacks this past season. The Giants own the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft and quarterbacks Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield could be in play.

Gettleman told his staff since being hired this year that he planned to alter the way they evaluate players and arrange their draft board. Though the process has changed, the Giants' scouting staff which reported to Ross has remain unchanged.

With Reese and Ross out of the picture, Gettleman has given scout Chris Pettit a bigger role. Now Koncz joins the mix with the Giants holding their highest draft pick since they selected Lawrence Taylor second overall in the 1981 NFL draft.

This is a vital offseason for the Giants. They are in position to potentially draft a franchise quarterback at the top of the draft for the first time since landing Eli Manning in 2004. They must also rebuild their offensive line in a year where the free agent crop at that position is considered weak.

Koncz could be especially valuable assessing free agents given his extensive experience in pro personnel. He spent 19 years in the pro personnel department with the Panthers.

The New York Post first reported his hiring with the Giants.
