Sterling Shepard returns to practice for banged-up Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants' injury-ravaged receiving corps received a boost Wednesday when Sterling Shepard returned to practice. He was a limited participant but was working at full speed and said he "felt good."

The second-year wide receiver missed Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos with an ankle injury. He was seen last Tuesday in a boot after suffering an injury in the previous week’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Shepard said it was a sprained ankle, similar to what he experienced this summer. That injury sidelined him a couple weeks.

The Giants host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday before heading into their bye week.

Shepard's return to practice is a positive sign.

"Practiced well," Giants coach Ben McAdoo said. "He looked better than he did last week."

The Giants wide receivers had just two catches for 22 yards in Sunday's win over the Broncos, so Shepard's return would help. He is third on the Giants with 22 catches for 263 yards and a touchdown this season. His return would boost a group of receivers that is already missing Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall and Dwayne Harris. They are all out for the remainder of the season with foot or ankle injuries.

The Giants started Roger Lewis and Tavarres King at receiver on Sunday night in Denver. Undrafted rookie Travis Rudolph also played sparingly in the slot.

Wide receiver isn’t the only position where the Giants are struggling with injuries. Center Weston Richburg (concussion) remains sidelined after missing the past two games and guard John Jerry (tooth) did not practice on Wednesday.

Cornerback Eli Apple (non-injury related) was excused Wednesday as he dealt with a personal matter. McAdoo said he expects Apple to return Thursday.

Linebacker Jonathan Casillas (neck) also worked on the side with a trainer, while Calvin Munson (quad) missed practice.

Shepard, safety Landon Collins (ankle), defensive end Olivier Vernon (ankle) and running back Paul Perkins (ribs) were all listed as limited participants at practice.

Vernon returned to practice after missing all of last week and Sunday's win over the Broncos.
