Chris Hogan's return knocks Phillip Dorsett down depth chart

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Wide receiver Chris Hogan returned to action after missing four games with a right shoulder injury, and that had a trickle-down effect on the New England Patriots' depth chart.

"It was good to be back out there with the guys, and be playing," said Hogan, who was targeted five times and had one catch for one yard. "I missed being out there with them."

Hogan went right back to his role as a top-2 receiver alongside Brandin Cooks, which pushed Phillip Dorsett down the depth chart. Dorsett didn't play an offensive snap, joining backup quarterback Brian Hoyer as the only players on the 46-man roster to not play.

Hogan's return, and the re-setting of the depth chart at receiver, leads off this week's snap-count analysis:

Offense: 61

Defense: 73

WIDE RECEIVER

Cooks: 60

Hogan: 55

Danny Amendola: 50

Amendola, who was primarily the No. 3 receiver, finished with a team-high six catches for 76 yards, all of which came in the second half.

TIGHT END

Dwayne Allen: 56

Jacob Hollister: 2

LaAdrian Waddle: 1

The 56 snaps represent a season-high for Allen, and he had two catches for 10 yards. Without Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots didn't run the two-tight-end package.

RUNNING BACK

James White: 35

Dion Lewis: 18

Rex Burkhead: 17

In part because they fell behind, it became a game in which White played the most as they were in more passing situations. But it never really seemed like the traditional running game was given a chance to get going. The combination of White and Burkhead was used with more frequency than the norm, which was a trickle-down effect of Gronkowski's absence.

FULLBACK

James Develin: 11

Without Gronkowski, the Patriots could have elected to run more two-back sets with Develin, but that wasn't a big part of the plan.

OFFENSIVE LINE

LT Nate Solder: 61

LG Joe Thuney: 61

C David Andrews: 61

RG Shaq Mason: 61

RT Cameron Fleming: 61

Fleming got the start for the second week in a row, even though LaAdrian Waddle passed his pregame test with an ankle injury. The Patriots obviously felt Waddle could help them in a pinch, but didn't want to push him too hard.

QUARTERBACK

Tom Brady: 61

The 61 snaps for Brady are tied for the second fewest of the season, behind 57 against Denver.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Malcom Brown: 64

Adam Butler: 55

Lawrence Guy: 54

Alan Branch: 15

With Branch leaving the game with a knee injury and not returning, it forced Brown, Butler and Guy to play more. The team might need reinforcements if Branch is going to miss time, and perhaps it leads them back to Ricky Jean Francois.

DEFENSIVE END

Eric Lee: 73

Deatrich Wise: 16

With Trey Flowers out again, the Patriots were thin, which is why Lee went wire to wire. He just joined the team on Nov. 21. Wise was playing through a foot injury.

LINEBACKER

Elandon Roberts: 57

Marquis Flowers: 51

Trevor Reilly: 21

Jonathan Freeny: 18

Flowers looked like he had the green dot on his helmet as the leader of the defensive huddle, and his 51 snaps were a season high. Flowers played on the edge for the second week in a row to help account for the team's personnel shortage there.

SAFETY

Devin McCourty: 73

Patrick Chung: 65

Duron Harmon: 25

Jordan Richards: 16

The Patriots played a more traditional approach with their safeties, which led to the lower snap count for Harmon, the third option when the team goes to its big nickel.

CORNERBACK

Malcolm Butler: 73

Stephon Gilmore: 73

Jonathan Jones: 40

Eric Rowe: 13

Johnson Bademosi: 1

The Dolphins run a lot of three-receiver packages, and the Patriots matched with their traditional nickel package the majority of the time.
