Walkthrough sparks question: How would Pats fill a David Andrews void?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The New England Patriots have dialed it back Thursday with a walkthrough practice, and starting center David Andrews wasn’t spotted at the start when media members were present.

Andrews wasn’t on the injury report after Wednesday’s full-pads practice, and context on his absence should be learned in the early evening when the club updates the report. In the interim, the absence sparks a thought on how the Patriots would fill his void if he wasn’t available.

Ted Karras, a 2016 sixth-round draft choice out of Illinois, is the top backup. He played his first snaps of the 2017 regular season this past Sunday against the Broncos when he replaced Andrews on the final series with the outcome in hand.

As a rookie, he started the season opener at right guard and played 108 snaps all season.

In addition to Andrews, special teams captain Matthew Slater (hamstring), starting wide receiver Chris Hogan (shoulder) and starting right tackle Marcus Cannon (ankle) remain behind in Massachusetts and are expected to be ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Raiders in Mexico.
