Best of the unis: Shamrock Series at Notre Dame, Maryland in 'red ops'

Under Armour rules the uniform world this week as a pair of its schools, Notre Dame and Maryland, debut new uniforms Saturday. Elsewhere, you'll see a special helmet at Marshall and plenty of military tributes.

Notre Dame's annual Shamrock Series game, in which the Irish play a "home" game away from home, returns to San Antonio where the Irish will face Army at the Alamodome. The game always coincides with a special alternate uniform, and this time Notre Dame will wear an olive/military green combination. The look is inspired by the second word of the motto engraved on the campus' Basilica of Sacred Heart: "God, Country, Notre Dame."

The Basilica is depicted on a hand-painted helmet, the sleeve of the jersey and the undershirt.

Maryland has shown "white ops" and "black ops" jerseys in the past. On Saturday, the Terrapins host Ohio State (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) in a "red ops" look for the first time. It's basically exactly what it sounds like, red from head to toe, similar to the NFL's "color rush" experiment.

It's been 45 years since the "Young Thundering Herd" took the field at Marshall in the season that followed a plane crash that claimed the lives of 75 people, including players and coaches. Marshall will wear a helmet that honors both teams Saturday against Middle Tennessee. The logo on the side is the same one the Herd wore in 1971, while the "75" decal on the back was inspired by the victims of the crash.

UCLA went all-in on the Veterans Day theme with military-esque font, a stars-and-stripes face mask and an undershirt patterned after the American flag.

UCF will show several different helmets when it hosts Cincinnati (noon ET, ESPNU), including lids that display logos from the five branches of the military. Players were given their choice of helmet.

Similarly, each of Washington's players will wear the name of a different veteran associated with the University of Washington. The No. 4 Huskies will also wear American flag-themed helmets when they host No. 20 USC.

Louisville will wear an almost identical look to the one we saw from Mississippi State last week (both Adidas schools). The Cardinals will pair it with a POW/MIA decal on the back of the helmet when they host Wake Forest (7 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

We'll see other military appreciation unis on Saturday from Syracuse, Troy and Arkansas State.
