Rumor Central: New deals unlikely for Aaron Gordon, Elfrid Payton?

Forward Aaron Gordon and guard Elfrid Payton are eligible to sign extensions up to the Oct. 16 deadline, but at this time, neither is expected to ink a new deal with the Orlando Magic, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Rumor Central

Josh Robbins writes that Orlando executives Jeff Weltman (president of basketball operations) and John Hammond (general manager) have said they prefer to use the 2017-18 NBA season to evaluate the entire roster before committing long term to any player.

"One thing I can tell you is they're both very talented and they're both very high-character guys who want to win, and that's a lot," Weltman said in September regarding Gordon and Payton.

When asked about Gordon's status, agent Calvin Andrews said he doesn't anticipate a deal getting done with the Magic by the deadline, reports Robbins. When asked about an extension, Gordon said he's not thinking about it.

"That's not why I play the game," Gordon said. "I trust Jeff Weltman and John Hammond to make the right decision, and I'm going to continue to play my game and continue to help my team get wins and improve as a basketball player."

With no deals signed, Gordon and Payton will become restricted free agents in 2018. Gordon is expected to begin the 2017-18 NBA season as the starting power forward, and Payton will retain his job at point guard.
