Rumor Central: Rockies looking to retain Jonathan Lucroy?

The Colorado Rockies apparently have interest in making Jonathan Lucroy more than just a short-term rental.

Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports that the Rockies will pursue the 31-year-old catcher, who hit .310/.429/.437 in 46 games for Colorado after being acquired in a July deadline deal with the Texas Rangers.

Harding notes that the Rockies made the playoffs this season with a relatively young pitching staff, and Lucroy would continue to provide “veteran guidance.”

Second-year catcher Tony Wolters started a team-high 66 games behind the plate for the Rockies in 2017 after rookie Tom Murphy was injured in spring training.

Lucroy, who turned down a trade from Milwaukee to Cleveland last summer before landing in Texas, should be in line for a nice raise from the relatively modest $5.25 million he made this season. Lucroy is expected to be the top free-agent catcher in a market that includes Welington Castillo and Alex Avila.
