Waunakee dominates but falls one spot in the AP Large Schools' prep football poll

MADISON, Wisc. - Waunakee soundly defeated the state’s second-ranked Medium Schools Division team last week but fell one spot to No. 3 in the rankings in this week’s Associated Press Large Schools football poll.

The Warriors (3-0), defending WIAA Division 2 state champions, routed Mount Horeb/Barneveld 46-0 in the Badger North Conference opener for both schools. Waunakee has outscored its opponents 149-7 this season.

However, Brookfield Central, the program that Waunakee defeated in last year’s Division 2 state championship game, moved into second-place in the rankings following its 41-7 victory over Germantown.

Monona Grove (3-0) moved up to eighth in the Large Schools Division poll after it opened up Badger South Conference play with a 21-7 victory over Oregon. Big Eight Conference co-leaders Madison Memorial (3-0) and Janesville Craig (3-0) received honorable mention.

Fond du Lac (3-0) received nine of 10 first-place votes to top the Large Schools Division poll for the third consecutive week.

Lodi (3-0) received one first-place vote and moved up one spot to No. 2 in the Medium Schools poll following its 16-7 victory over Arlington Heights (Ill.) Saint Viator last week.

Mount Horeb/Barneveld (2-1) fell six spots to No. 8 after its’ loss at Waunakee. Lake Mills moved into a tie for 10th place after it defeated Mauston 24-14.

Lakeside Lutheran and McFarland earned honorable mention.

Waukesha Catholic Memorial (3-0) received nine of 10 first-place votes to top the Medium Schools’ Division poll.

Defending Division 6 state champion Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs received all 10 first-place votes to remain ranked first in the Small Schools’ Division (300 and lower). Belleville received honorable mention.

The poll includes first-place votes in parentheses, season record and total points, as voted upon by a statewide panel of sports writers. Teams are arranged in three divisions of equal size based on current enrollments.
