Waunakee, Mount Horeb/Barneveld top area schools in second AP prep football poll

Madison, Wisc. -- Defending Division 2 state champion Waunakee is tied for second in the Large Schools’ Division (schools with enrollment of 900 or more) weekly Associated Press high school football poll.

The Warriors, who are the three-time defending Badger North Conference champions, received one first-place vote for the second consecutive week. They will host Mount Horeb/Barneveld, which is ranked second in the Medium Schools’ Division, in their Badger North Conference opener on Friday night.

Waunakee raced past Watertown 37-7 to improve to 2-0 and has outscored its opponents 103-7 through the first two weeks.

Fond du Lac received eight of nine first-place votes to top the Large Schools Division poll for the second consecutive week. Brookfield Central, which lost to Waunakee in the 2017 Division 2 state final, moved into a second-place tie with Waunakee.

Monona Grove, the defending Badger South Conference champion, moved into the top 10 in a tie for 10th place following a 49-14 victory over Portage. Monona Grove hosts Oregon to open Badger South Conference play on Friday.

Madison Memorial and Verona, which are tied for the Big Eight Conference lead with Janesville Craig, received honorable mention.

Waukesha Catholic Memorial received eight of nine first-place votes to top the Medium Schools’ Division (schools with enrollments of 301-899). Mount Horeb/Barneveld moved into second place in the poll after defeating Oregon 41-30 in a Badger Conference crossover game last Friday.

Defending Division 4 state and Capitol North Conference champion Lodi moved into third place in the Medium Schools Division. The Blue Devils routed Wisconsin Dells 40-0 last week.

Lakeside Lutheran moved up one spot to ninth in the Medium Schools’ Division poll. The Warriors defeated Elkhorn 35-20 last week.

Defending Division 6 state champion Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs received all nine first-place votes to remain ranked first in the Small Schools’ Division (300 and lower). Belleville received honorable mention.

The poll includes first-place votes in parentheses, season record and total points, as voted upon by a statewide panel of sports writers. Teams are arranged in three divisions of equal size based on current enrollments.
