Inspired by J.J. Watt, Jared Goff hopes to aid wildfire victims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The wildfires that continue to devastate the Northern California region have hit close to home for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

Goff grew up in Marin County, California, less than 40 miles south of Sonoma and Napa, two of several counties that have been ravaged by wildfires in recent weeks. The death toll hit 42 on Tuesday night, according to local reports, and thousands have been displaced.

"Brutal," Goff said last week. "It's been rough."

Now Goff is hoping to do something about it. On Tuesday, an off day for his Rams, Goff launched a GoFundMe page (found on his Twitter account) with the goal of raising $50,000 for the Sonoma County Fire Chiefs Association. As of 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, 112 people had raised $18,530.

Goff was inspired by Houston Texans star J.J. Watt, who ultimately raised more than $37 million for victims of Hurricane Harvey -- after an initial goal of $200,000.

"That's unbelievable what he did, especially with the devastation they had there," Goff said. "That definitely gave me an idea. 'Maybe I can do something like that.' Maybe not of that scale, but it definitely prompted the thought.”

More than 200,000 acres have been burned in 13 major fires in Northern California over the last 10 days, with 6,700 homes and other structures destroyed along the way, according to a report by CNBC. As of Wednesday, 53 people remained missing in Sonoma County. A week of warm days and dry air helped keep the fires raging, but cooler weather is settling in and there is even hope for rainfall as soon as Thursday.

Goff had been thinking about raising money "for a while" and finally had a chance to set up the page this week, with his team currently practicing out of Jacksonville, Florida, before flying to London on Thursday.

"Being from where I'm from," Goff said, "it's something I wanted to do to try to give back."
