Corey Liuget's back injury could open door for Jerry Attaochu's debut

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- A limited participant on Wednesday, Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Corey Liuget missed practice on Thursday due to a sore back, leaving open the possibility that he could miss his first game of the season.

“He’s very limited,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “He did some things inside.”

Liuget has been an impact player for the Chargers so far this year, but his replacement, Darius Philon, also has played well in limited duty, with two sacks and 14 combined tackles.

The possibility of Liuget not playing on Sunday could lead to the 2017 debut of defensive end Jerry Attaochu. A second-round selection in the 2014 draft out of Georgia Tech, Attaochu dealt with a lingering hamstring issue during training camp and early in the regular season, but has been a healthy scratch the last four games.

One of the reasons Attaochu has not made it on the field has been the play of Chris McCain as an effective edge rusher and special teams player.

“We’ve suited up eight defensive linemen, so if we had seven, it’s not the end of the world,” Lynn said about the possibility of Liuget being out. “But Jerry could come up. We’d have to look at who is going to help our special teams, really.”

Along with Liuget, right tackle Joe Barksdale (foot) did not practice Thursday.

Running back Melvin Gordon was limited for a second straight day with a shoulder issue, something Lynn described as soreness and not a serious problem.

Others who were limited on Thursday were receiver Keenan Allen (shoulder) and safety Adrian Phillips (neck/concussion).

Center Spencer Pulley (shoulder), linebacker Jatavis Brown (ankle) and running back Branden Oliver (hamstring) were listed as full participants.

Lynn also said Jason Verrett had successful knee surgery in Dallas three weeks ago and stayed there to rehab for a few weeks. Verrett is back in town rehabbing and is in good spirits, according to Lynn.
