Haloti Ngata wins $25,000 for his foundation in social media contest

Haloti Ngata is already a finalist to become the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year. Now, after an aggressive campaign on social media, he's already earned some money for his foundation.

Ngata was named the winner of the Man of the Year Charity Challenge, which was based on mentions on social media from Dec. 11 to Jan. 7. Whoever got the most mentions with the hashtag #WPMOYChallenge would pick up a $25,000 donation to his charity.

On Thursday, the NFL announced Ngata and his charity, the Haloti Ngata Family Foundation, had won.

The Foundation has worked with trying to get students into college by offering free college prep courses. They've also made donations to the Johns Hopkins Diabetes Research Center, the Maryland School for the Blind, among others, and have donated money to teachers and for school supplies based off an annual luau they hold.

Ngata, who will be an unrestricted free agent in March, told 97.1 FM in Detroit last week he would like to play in the 2018 season after missing most of the 2017 season with a biceps injury that required surgery. He'll be 34 years old next season and has spent his entire career with the Ravens and Lions.
