Keenum, Chubb tasked with leading Broncos' resurgence

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos ended their offseason program on June 14. Here’s a look at how things went.

How they fared: Above average

Offseason goals: From president of football operations/general manager John Elway on down, the organization plowed into the offseason with the search for a starting quarterback at the top of the to-do list. They chose Case Keenum to lead the repair of their offense and then set about the business of trying to find a consistent group of offensive linemen and to add some impact to a defense they believe can still be one of the league’s best.

Move I liked: While the trade for tackle Jared Veldheer several weeks into free agency was a high-quality effort that will fill a glaring need in the offense, the Broncos quickly scooping up Bradley Chubb with the No. 5 pick of the draft is a move that could be pivotal for years to come. Chubb, who was the best pass-rusher on the draft board, has shown plenty of elite athleticism in the team’s early workouts, but most importantly he’s also shown a level-headed, get-after-it approach in his day-to-day work. That bodes well for his chances at the kind of success the Broncos hope for while also helping make the most of Von Miller's prime years.

Move I didn’t like: It’s more like the move they didn’t make. The Broncos had enough draft capital -- they made 10 picks this past April -- to reel in an additional prospect or two in their offensive line. Yes, the tackle position, in particular, was rather thin overall on the draft board, but the Broncos used just one pick on the offensive line -- center Sam Jones in the sixth round (183rd overall). They have struggled plenty over the past four seasons to find the combination that works and haven’t always had their own prospects waiting in line so it is still a position that will need attention long-term.

Biggest question still to be answered in training camp: How will the offensive line look when the regular season begins? Season after season -- even during their 2015 Super Bowl season -- they continue to juggle lineup combinations during the offseason workouts and training camp, hoping to find a starting five that plays with chemistry and enough consistently keeps their quarterbacks out of harm’s way. This time around they still aren’t sure how things will look at guard as Connor McGovern and Menelik Watson are among those getting a look for one starting spot while Ron Leary is expected to move back to left guard from right guard, but coach Vance Joseph has said that hasn’t been decided yet.

Quotable: “One of the biggest things we have to fix is when we would do something bad last year and the next thing you know it would be completely shot, we didn’t bounce back. We have to have that edge and that means getting to work. Sometimes last year we had guys who were just happy to be here and if you’re just happy to be here, then you’re not going to work like you should." -- Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas
