ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A week out from the first round of the NFL draft, Denver Broncos president of football operations/general manager John Elway said Thursday that he’d be willing to take a quarterback at No. 5 or deal the pick if the price is right.

Several high-profile quarterbacks are expected to go early in the draft, and Elway said the team is still reviewing the prospects.

"We will take the best player [at No. 5] that’s the best for the Denver Broncos, whoever that is," Elway said.

Asked if that meant regardless of position, Elway replied, "Yes."

The Broncos signed quarterback Case Keenum to a two-year deal in the opening hours of free agency. Elway has called Keenum the "right fit for us" and reaffirmed Thursday that "Case is our starter."

But the Broncos also have heavily vetted the draft’s top quarterback prospects -- Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Wyoming’s Josh Allen -- and had a private workout with Darnold and extra meetings with Rosen and Mayfield since Keenum signed.

However, with so many teams around the league seeking solutions at quarterback, there will be plenty of potential for teams at the top of the opening round to make a deal. And Elway made it clear he will take the phone calls there as well.

"I’m open to trade," Elway said.

Elway added that in the coming days he and the Broncos’ coaches, scouts and others in the personnel department will try to create as many different scenarios as they can, including potential trades, to be ready for however the first round unfolds next week.

"And if we’re going to move back, we've got to go look and say, 'What do we think we’re going to get if we move back?'" Elway said. "... [And] if we move up, what's it going to cost us if we move up?"
