Dallas Cowboys' 2018 free agency: Deonte Thompson marks start at WR

A breakdown of the Dallas Cowboys' 2018 free-agent signings:

Deonte Thompson, WR

The Cowboys signed Thompson, who split time last season with the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills. Here's a closer look at the signing:

Grade: B-minus. The Cowboys have been focused on adding a receiver in free agency and finally got one with Thompson, who has 77 catches for 1,032 yards and four touchdowns in his career.

What it means: The Cowboys have added speed to their offense with Thompson, who averaged 15.9 yards per catch in his 11 games with the Bills last season. The move does not take the Cowboys out of the market for Allen Hurns, which could have an effect on Dez Bryant's future with the team. Right now, Thompson can be looked at as a replacement for Brice Butler, who is a free agent.

What's the risk: There isn't any. It's not the sexy move that signing Sammy Watkins would have been, but Watkins had just one more catch than Thompson last year and is set to make $16 million per year. Thompson will make $2.5 million with Dallas. The Cowboys have taken a low-key approach to free agency, and Thompson falls in line with their approach in the last few years. The financial commitment does not remove them from drafting a wide receiver early, but they at least have some cover if things don't fall their way in April.
