Ozzie Newsome on Ryan Grant: 'Medical decision I have no control over'

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said Friday that free-agent wide receiver Ryan Grant failed his physical over an ankle issue.

The Ravens received the results at 4 p.m. Thursday after the team doctors consulted with other physicians around the country. Baltimore then voided the four-year, $29 million agreement in principle with Grant.

"To me, that’s not a football decision,” Newsome said. "That’s a medical decision that I have no control over."

Newsome said the team was aware that Grant had an ankle injury. Grant appeared on the injury report for three weeks (Weeks 15-17), but he has never missed a game in his four-year career.

Still, Baltimore was surprised by Grant failing his physical with the Ravens because he passed his exit one with the Redskins.

“I thought we have been very fair and I thought we’ve been more on the players' side when it comes down to physicals,” Newsome said.

There was some skepticism about the Ravens’ deal with Grant. Baltimore had reached an agreement that included $14.5 million guaranteed with a wide receiver who didn’t have 1,000 yards in his entire four-year career.

The criticism didn’t bother Newsome.

"It would have been interesting if we were sitting here a year from now or two years from now, and those same people who scrutinized us for doing it what they would have been thinking,” Newsome said. “They’d probably be hiding in a hole somewhere."

Grant is scheduled to meet with the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"If there were a game tomorrow Ryan would be able to play," agent Rocky Arceneaux told Schefter.
