Ravens surprisingly receive only a sixth-round compensatory pick in 2018

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens received an unwanted surprise Friday, when they received only a sixth-round compensatory pick in the 2018 draft.

The Ravens had been projected to get a third-round comp pick, but they were awarded with one that fell short of that expectation.

What hurt Baltimore was the injury to offensive tackle Rick Wagner late last season. Wagner, who left the Ravens for the Detroit Lions in free agency last season, injured his ankle, limiting him to 13 games. Snap counts figure into the league's comp pick formula, and coincidentally Wagner was hurt in his first game back in Baltimore.

According to OverTheCap.com, the loss of Wagner didn't result in an extra third-rounder and was instead canceled out by the Ravens' addition of safety Tony Jefferson. That left Baltimore with a sixth-round pick for losing defensive lineman Lawrence Guy to the New England Patriots.

The Ravens have been awarded 49 compensatory picks since the system began in 1994. That's seven more than any other team in the league (the Packers are second with 42). This is the second year that compensatory picks can be traded.

Here are the Ravens' eight draft picks in the 2018 draft:

First round: No. 16 overall

Second round: No. 52 overall

Third round: No. 83

Fourth round: No. 118 overall

Fifth round: No. 154 overall

Sixth round: Nos. 190 and 215 overall

Seventh round: No. 238
